Re-hi all,

On Friday Jun 13 1997 I wrote:

Here's the problem. Got an (install) disk connected to a machine
without checking the SCSI id, and that id was already on the machine.
Booted the machine and quick as a flash... nothing happens.

Now we cannot see the info on the install disk any more. The partition
table seems to be gone for one.

I can't believe that the whole disk is bereft of info. Does anyone have
any ideas to get the info back?

I got very helpful suggestions from

cmconwa@sandia.gov (Christopher M. Conway) and
bismark@alta.Jpl.Nasa.Gov (Bismark Espinoza) both suggested changing
the SCSI id and rebooting.

This I'd already tried (I should have said).

You've likely overwritten whatever partition table was there with junk.
You should be able to get format to rebuild it but you are going to
have to put it onto a system with a disk of the same type (so that
format will know what it looks like when you go to select it).

Failing this, you will need to rebuild the partition table by hand. You
should be able to get pretty close to the original, if you can find
another one of the same type elsewhere. Once you've put this partition
table back with format, things should miraculously show up.

This would probably have worked, were it not for the fact that I wasn't
told that after it failed to come up at first, `we' did an fsck -y on it.

Did I mention it was Friday the 13th?

Luckily we had a backup.
