Integration and Assessment

As mentioned previously, the work on designing and implementing tools for assessment was already started, since such tools were already required by other tasks.

With the increased involvement in the construction of tools for assessment at ECRC, good progress has been made in the last year on the performance debugging tool ParSee. A technical report [59] has been produced describing the full system, and papers presented at different conferences. Recent work has concentrated on visualization aspects. The usual interface produces a set of colour-coded charts (Gantt charts) to indicate performance bottlenecks. This has been improved to display more textual information and to allow zooming in on time intervals. A new interface has also been developed, exploiting 3D rendering techniques to produce a clearer, easily-grasped representation of the evolution of the performance metrics. This is described in [60]. The work on VisAndOr (the visualization tool developed at UPM) continued, incorporating several improvements suggested by its users. We have also worked on making ParSee compatible with the VisAndOr trace file format, so that interoperability of the tools is ensured, and they can be easily interfaced with tools produced by other project partners.

A tool to determine the potential parallelism inherent in an execution regardless of implementation details, named IDRA, was designed and implemented [32]. This tool has been instrumental in the assessment of all partitioning and sequentialization tools (and also used by several researchers inside and outside the project which have provided useful feedback).

The common abstract syntax and interfaces have been completed [11]. These allow interoperability and communication between analysis tools. Finally, studies on several improvements to the &-Prolog/Ciao platform to better support the tools being developed have been performed [37, 56].
