Hello!

Enclosed is the original msg that I post before.

I solved my problem on this Harddisk when I get really annoyed and get to
try extreme things. This harddisk was originally in an external drive case,
I opened the case and put TWO fans blowing directly at the harddisk (those
two fans are those household use BIG fan) and try formatting the drive
again, this time, no more spin down.... And format works

Most of the people reponse was the drive is failing. Anyways, I would like
to thank to all of them.

As you know, pointing two BIG household fan at one little harddisk (5400rpm)
isn't the long-term solution. Can anyone suggest some cooling solutions (low
cost) to me so I can get rid of those fans? I am using a single bay external
case (5.25" and the disk is half height 3.5) , so that's the space limit.

Those two fans are getting annoying, and I get complains all over and have
to fix it ASAP.....

I will write a summary on this whole problem.

Hello!

I have tried for weeks to install a Seagate ST15230WC to my Sparc LX, this
is getting very annoying....

The procedure of install:

I have a boot harddisk which is another Seagate on SCSI ID 3 and I config
the new Seagate ST15230WC at SCSI ID 0. I did drvconfig, disks, tapes,
/usr/ucb/ucblinks format

I am then struck at this stage. When I first got the drive, I tried to
analysis the surface. Everything was kind of fine. I remember that it
reconize the drive is a Sun 4.2G. Then, I want to re-format the drive. I
just type format. It tells me that the drive needs 71 minutes to format. I
answered Y. Then it started the format operation. After about 10 mins, I
hear some very strange noise. The drive itself spin down totally and spin up
again after about 5 - 10 sec. The format operation was not stopped (nothing
happens on the screen). This happens a few times. After about 1-1.5 hours,
the screen suddenly comes up with strange SCSI error. I was not able to send
any command to the drive anymore (for example doing another format) I have
to reboot and gain control (other drives was ok).

I did many many retries. Now, the format doesn't even auto reconize the
drive. I have to manually enter the type, I have tried to manually enter the
cyl. and other info and have tried to use Sun 4.2G. No luck at all, still
have the problem with the spin down and up.

Did I do anything wrong in the setup of the disk? Did I missed any steps?

I have used different SCSI cables and terminators. I have put this drive in
an external case with fan and test and still no luck...

I would appreciate if anyone can suggest anything to test or do. I will
write a summary.
