Dear Managers,

first of all ... thanks to:

Kitty Ferguson <ferguson@jabba.hao.ucar.edu>
Frank Cusack <fcusack@voicenet.com>
Casper Dik <casper@holland.Sun.COM>

Question:
Are there any known problems using UFS ACLs under Solaris 2.5.1 (HW8/97)
and are they known to work correctly ....

Answer:
Kitty and Frank pointed out that they didn't worked out correctly for
them.
Casper said that they should be fine, if you have installed the latest
recommended patches ... although some problems are still there ...

Kitty:
>...
>In general though, they look good, and in thoery should work, but they
just
>don't. They can be set up according to the documentation, but they do
not >allow accesses as you might think.

Frank:
>I could never get default ACL's to work correctly. I can apply them
>to a directory, directories created under that take on the default ACL,

>but files do not take on the default ACL as their ACL.

Casper:
>If you have the latest recommended patch set, you should be fine.
>There are some known problems and there's one current misfeature.
>(When using default ACLS, the umask still applies)
>You must have the lofs patches (loopback mounts don't support ACLs w/o
>the patch) and the kernel patch (some use of ACLs may panic the system
>when used w/ r/o filesystems)

Under Solaris 2.5.1 (HW8/97) and the recommended patches Nov/97 the UFS
ACLs I was able to set up the ACLs working correctly. The problems Frank
mentioned are gone ... I tested serveral different configurations ..
all worked out correctly for me ... beside the umask problem ... but
that's not important in my configuration as I am using samba with
hardcoded umask and filecreation settings in this environment ...

Thanks once again ....

Chris
