Thanks to everyone who replied to my original question of where i could
find the cc compiler. (list to long to cut and paste). i did not realize
this was in the faq. sun makes you purchase cc, whereas GNU gcc (which i
had) is available free on the net.

dbaker@wrangler.cuckoo.com offered the best quick-fix. just do
mv /usr/ucb/cc /usr/ucb/cc.old
ln -s /usr/local/bin/gcc /usr/ucb/cc

to my shock, this actually fooled the program.
i didn't realize how similar the two products were.....
