Primarily (and correctly) you folks said the following:
"... I hope you know that you can't upgrade from Solaris 1.x
[SunOS 4.1.x] to Solaris 2.x. You have to do a complete
installation."
I didn't mention that I will be removing the system drive with the
SunOS 4.1.3 load out of the machine, and installing a clean new
disk as the system disk for 2.5.1.
We've already migrated most user accounts to our primary NIS server, and
plan to install Solaris 2.5.1 compatible versions of our applications.
So to summarize so far:
Your (sun-manager) advice is treat this as a "new install" (not upgrade)
and we should expect it to take anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks to
accomplish, and I should plan to fall-back to 4.1.3 if we have any major
hangups.
Additionally, we should try setting up the entire configuration on a
parallel box instead of on the actual machine, and once the new box is
successfully performing it's duties, swap it for the old box in a single
move.
Some new information:
We have been advised to move from UUCP to SMTP
We need to add POP, IMAP.

Hi everyone,
I've been tasked with upgrading a SunOS 4.1.3_DBE installation to
Solaris 2.5.1 on a SPARC2 server.
Configuration is 48MB RAM, tty console (no video card) and SCSI
devices.
This machine is our backup NIS/DNS server (primary is SunOS 4.1.4_DB)
--We don't intend to update to NIS+ yet.-- That could be 6-12 months
down stream.
It also serves NFS mounted user accounts
XNTP, UUCP, Sendmail, INN, CERN HTTPD, and will server CAP and SAMBA
when we're through with this upgrade.
Any gotchas, watch-out-fors, do-you-really-wannas?
