The original post:
I am running Solaris 2.4 and frequently when I list the contents of a tar tape or tarfile (tar tvf) I get the following:

tar: impossible file type-rw-rw-r-- 0/1 143276 Feb 20 17:22 1997 xxfile

Yet when I extract the files, they tar off correctly -is this something I should be concerned about or how do I fix this? patches ?

The answers:
1. most replies suggested that the file or tape was made on an HP or DEC or SGI etc. and GNUtar was suggested.
2. Some suggested that the file or tape was created with GNUtar,Again loading and running GNUtar was suggested.

Gnutar was installed and tested on several files and tapes of unknown tar origin and all listed out properly without giving any errors.

many thanks,
