Unless you specify -pipe.  Perhaps our kind totally-not-overworked BUGTRAQ
moderator :-) would like to see whether GNU autoconf sets -pipe
automatically when gcc is detected?  (I think so but unfortunately don't
have much sources handy at the moment.)
