Thank you to all who responded. The summary of all responses is:

Take a look in /var/spool/cron/crontabs. You may have a file in there
named "root%". Every file in there must correspond to a user, and if
there is one that doesn't you get the above error. Someone edited the
cron for 'root' using the file manager on the console of OpenWindows.
This editor automatically makes a backup file by adding "%"
to the file name. You can get rid of the message by deleting this backup
file from the directory /var/spool/cron/crontabs.
