The difference is static vs. dynamic linking. If
your *.so libraries, or the partition they live
on, are gone, or inaccessible, you can use the
statically-linked binaries in /sbin
If you want to substitute a single binary for the
two, be sure that the single new one is statically
linked, and lives in /sbin. The Gnu C
compiler lets you force static linking with a
command line switch; I
